Ida B. Wells

"one better die fighting against injustice than die like a dog or a rat in a trap" - Ida B. Wells

this quote by Ida B. Wells i really strongly agree with. i would rather die trying to fight for what i belive in and for my rights than not speak and the injustice that i go through still continue and someone lse expierence what i went through. i dont just fight for my rights i fight for everybody elses too. i think that everybody should be treated equally and not one person should be treated any different. this quote applies to my life especially because i fight for the right of my daughter! there was this time where somebody in this place i used to live was denying to give me formula for my baby and after what seemed like forever we stopped arguing and they went to go to the cabinet where the formula was suppose to be and they came back in and told me that they didnt have the kind of formula my daughter drinks and told me that i have to feed my baby this other formula that is milk based when she is allergic to milk. so there was another arguement where i was fighting for my formula because there suppose to provide us what we need for ourselves and our babies and at that time they were not providing me or my baby what they need. in the end i got what i wanted.

Assata Shakur

Assata Shakur is an amazing women who marks date in history as a feminist. To me she is an amazing strong women. She is proude of who she is and where she comes from as a black women. She lived with her grand parents who tried to imbue in her personal dignityand to never act out in front of the whites. She stood up for not only the rights of herself but her people and her cultural and ethnic backround as well. She joined many orginizations as a student and took a social work class.
The characterisitics Assata Shakur has i would definately like to have. those charcteristics are strong, confidnt, a fighter for her rights, activists, believer, and more. With some of the things Assata Shakur did ans has expierenced thrughout her life in a little way relate. for example i am in this thing called the system and each individual is given a paper that has their personal rights and they give you a list of rules and expextations on the paper and each and everytime my right is violated i fight back to have my rights and each time they try to tell me that im not allowed to do this or that im quick to pull out the rule book that list what we can and cant do and what are expectations are. it alwauys raises hell.

Maus 1

1.) the book "maus 1" by Art Spiegelman was about the holocaust and what he and his family went through during those hard times. In the book he chose mice, pigs, and cats as the characters as a sense of disquise. The jews were the mice, the nazi were the cats, and the polish were the pigs. the reason i think he chose these animals to act as a disquise and sense of identity is because cats (nazis) chase mice ( jews) in which run and try to hide from the cats in whom are more dominant. the reason i think he chose the polish as the pigs are because the go both mays they can be chased by cats and start running or chase the mice themselves.

2.)i think the reason why he chose to tell his story in a comic book format was because it is such an emotional and serious and traumatic topic and event that occured during his life time it was kind of too much to tell in a regular format of a book or biography. maybe it was the only way he felt comfortable expressing what he and his family went through.

3.)the "noose" is tightenig in this chapter because as of then it was just beginning they had started gathering the jews and putting them into ghettos and the jews really dont know whats to come. They dont know that next the are going to be sent to work camps and death camps. the dont know that death is approaching and they are going to be seperated from their family.

4.)when spieglman uses people as characters rather than animals like he does in other parts of the book is because he is talking about a traumatice expierence he went through and seen as a child and that is the suicide of his mother. the death of his mother was very unexpected. she slashed her wrists and overdosed on a bottle of pills. she left no note. this was a time where he broke down and let his emotions out but afterwards he became numb to any future pain.

5.)i think he calls his dad a murderer because his dad burned the only memories of his mom.

The Pill: Doctor/ Patient Relationship

Hearings by the Senate about the birth control pill began in the 70's leading to numerous things such as the safety of the pill and doctor/patient relationships.it gained many attention of women who protested that they feel as if they have no control over their own body.
Alice Wolfson told assembled reporters at a press conference held by an orginization called D.C Womens Liberation, "'we will no longer tolerate intimidation by white-coated gods antiseptically directing our lives'". she had a pint of making it clear that they were no means opposed to the principal of the pill, but instead ambushed professions that allowed "'unsafe contraceptives'" to be "'foisted on uninformed women'".
Women back then just didn't participate in medical decisions. The standard of a good patient is one who didn't as questions . This was because doctor supposively knew best and had all the anwsers. However when it came to the birth control pill doctors really werent that knowledgable . the invested their information from pharmaceutical companies which downplayed the health risks. Medical journals however, published records of health risks in specialized hournals that doctors did not read.
The problem was that even when the doctors did know the potential risks considered it not necessary to tell female patients that the potential healthr isks that may come are strokes, heart attacks, and blood clots while on the pill. Two thirds of women that were surveyed were not informed by their doctors about these risks.
Alice Wolfson became furious that doctors were making what could have been life or death situations with out involving women in the decision. Many women refused to remain passive in their own health care. Motivated by the Pill hearings, the feminist health care movement moved into high gear and challenged the traditional model of paternalistic doctor/ patient relationships.

howard zinn at city college

today is april 20, 2010 and today i attended the honoring the passing of HOWARD ZINN at city college. it was really nice to hear all the speeches about current and past activists that fought for not only their rights but the rights of others. they all stood out to me especially the ones who were talking about the war. one quote from one of the ladies reciting that stood out to me was, "Fuck the yellow ribbon, bring our troops home!" and also the one where the girl was talking about the passing of her husband in the military and how she has three kids and forget about the government and the check they send to her because the passing of her husband and she tears up the check and sends it back to them each and everytime becuase no check will bring her husband home. i was just so struck by the power of the words that were coming from these students at city college. what also stood out to me was when at the end the lasy was saying how they are going to sacremento to the governors office and protest that they are not tolerating the unjust anymore.
